Treatment of Surficial and Depressurization Water at Surface Mines
Removal and/or depressurization of groundwater via wells is essential in many industrial applications, including oil sands surface mining operations. Although the removed water is never part of the actual mining or processing operation, in many cases the water does not meet standards for discharge into the environment. If so it must be stored in large, purpose built, ponds until the quality meets standards or, alternatively, the water is diverted to the mine’s main tailing ponds, at which time it is considered to be mining water.
Seair’s surface mining water treatment systems provide high volume on-site processing of groundwater in connection with preparation or operation of surface mines. After treatment using Seair equipment, groundwater meets standards for discharge into the environment. Seair’s solution dramatically decreases water infrastructure costs by eliminating the need for long-term storage of non-compliant extracted groundwater. Additional storage pond or diversion of non-mining water into tailings ponds is no longer required. As a result, tailing pond capacities are effectively increased without any physical changes or expansion.
Seair offers a variety of treatment systems. Ground water with low hydrogen sulphide (H2S) levels is treated on an in-line basis using atmospheric air diffused using Seair’s patented technologies. These in-line systems, which are readily incorporated into existing piping and require no additional pumps or mechanical devices, increase dissolved oxygen (DO) levels and decrease biological oxygen demand (BOD) to meet discharge standards.
Water with higher H2S levels is treated using Seair’s ozone-based systems. These high volume systems, which rapidly reduce H2S levels below levels specified for environmental discharge, can be tied into multiple wells in order to reduce overall cost.
All Seair units are fully automated and designed to handle the harshest weather.
